Crew
Kat has been an offshore sailor since her teens. In college she bought a Cal 25 and lived aboard at anchor, sailing to Catalina and Ensenada during school breaks. Singlehanding the small sloop when crew was unavailable led to the skill needed to enter the Singlehanded Transpac in 1980. Her future husband was on the race committee and after the race they lived aboard his larger boat sailing from San Fransisco, through the Channel Islands to Mexico and Central America. Offshore sailing took a break as Kat raised two children and founded an independent bookstore but racing dingys and scows on inland lakes allowed her to keep sailing. A diagnosis of MS in 1998 made offshore sailing seem like a less possible prospect so she is thrilled to have been accepted as a part of the crew sailing Oceans of Hope from Auckland.
