Swimming in the middle of the ocean

OoH Aug 15, 2014, by Mikkel Farver in Yacht

It is interesting to think about the differences there are between my life as it is right now, in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean, and my everyday life back home in Denmark.

I thought the adventure would be both interesting and also a bit boring sometimes.  But it has not been boring at any time. I wondered if one book would be enough for me for the Atlantic crossing, but I haven't even opened it yet (and I don't think I will).

Life here is very easy.  We sail the boat, we prepare our meals, we navigate, we talk (a lot) with each other and have a lot of fun, we sleep, some of us try to catch a fish – not very successfully yet, he only fish we have caught is a beautiful blue flying fish which landed on the deck last night.

I really appreciate the fact that I am so lucky to be on Oceans of Hope on this voyage.

Today we have been swimming in the middle of the ocean with five kilometres to the bottom (FIVE!)  A very strange feeling, but also very enjoyable as we have had minimum temperature of 35 degree Celsius today, and the ocean is refreshing 26.1 degree Celsius.

It is almost impossible to explain what it is like to be here – but it is fantastic.  The whole crew are very, very nice people – eight new, good friends.

For me, this adventure, this fantastic project ‘Sailing Sclerosis’, has had an important influence on me.  I have used Sailing Sclerosis as the positive story when I've talked to other people about being me and being diagnosed with MS.  It has been easier for me to tell people about my diagnosis when I could refer to it in relation to this positive project…
