Jakob's blog from the Exumas

OoH Jan 8, 2015, by Jakob Gottfredsen in Yacht

So, I am on the train. It's going to Roskilde – first I am going to Joan and Soeren. I am not really sure if I should be looking forward, it will probably come later. I said goodbye to the three girls, and it was weird. But they were a bit envious. A shame that they can't come along. I miss them already.

Friday the 3rd of January

I am leaving from Joan and Soeren about three hours before the flight to Fort Lauderdale. I barely slept tonight, so hopefully I can sleep a bit on the plane during my flight to the U.S. I guess I am starting to look forward.

So, I am in the plane. It is just eight hours flying, then I will be in the U.S. At 3:50 in the afternoon the plane is taking off, and I think I can get some sleep. I couldn't...

Saturday the 4th of January

Today we made a shopping list. And then it was off to go shopping. You try and shop for 10 people, who need food for +10 days. I had never tried that before, but it was rad. We had four full shopping carts, and the bill came to $1,100. When we were done putting everything away and stowing it properly, we went out for dinner and before we were back it was late, so I went to bed.

Sunday the 5th of January

Today we had to clean the boat, because at 10:00 a.m. we had an open boat event with a US-organisation, called Shake-A-Leg. It was good. The Americans thought so too. The Mayor of Fort Lauderdale and a lot of others were there. Shake-A-Leg is a sailing community for people who have been injured or have an incurable disease or handicap, such as people who are paralyzed from an accident.

At 12:00 noon we left from Fort Lauderdale to sail through the night, because now we were going to the Bahamas. It is gonna be big. We expect to be there around 6:00 p.m. the next night.

Monday the 6th of January

We arrived here around 6:00 p.m., but it was pitch black, so we couldn't see a thing. But we are staying here for a day, I think, and it should be very beautiful, so I am looking forward to tomorrow, when it gets light. Goodnight and sleep tight.

Tuesday the 7th of January

Yes, it is beautiful here, but the sun isn't shining yet. Hope it shows later.

The dinghy is punctured in the bottom, but it will be fixed, when it stops raining. Right now we are just cleaning up the boat, while it rains. We are anchored by some islands called Ship Channel Cays. And now I think I'll go for a swim.

Wednesday the 8th of January

Today I woke up around 7:30 a.m. Stayed in bed for a bit, and then I got up. Jeanette, my wife, sent me a text, that Elvira, our youngest daughter of 13, has seen us on Facebook when we were in Fort Lauderdale, where we had our picture taken with Mayor Seiler and were filmed as we sailed out of the harbor. It is nice to know that somebody is following us! And I must admit I was a bit touched, and had to wipe off a tear (just a little one).

Right now we just had breakfast and Emil is fixing something in the galley. Then we are sailing to Staniel Cay. What else the day brings, I don't know. I guess we will see!

Report from Bosun Bertram:

As the weather cleared up yesterday, Ship Channel Cays turned out to be an amazing anchorage, allowing us to stay so close to shore that you could swim to the beach. Fish of all colours at the nearby reef and as soon as we had repaired our punctured dinghy, we were racing back and forth from the palm trees to the orange yacht. This morning the wind had picked up significantly from the west, and instead of trying to snorkel through the waves, we agreed to make the best of the wind and do a leg south. Genoa on a spinnaker pole and south it went with an average of 9 knots in 22 knots of wind. We're now an hour away from Staniel Cay, where we will drop the hook for a night before we do the long stretch to Jamaica.

Local time on board is 13:45 an our current position is 24'15.81N , 76'36.53W.

1550 flyet letter.

Nu skal jeg sove.

Det kunne jeg ikke.

Loerdag d. 4. januar

 faar at se?
