Sailing through the night - Blog by Brenden

OoH Jun 29, 2015, by Brenden Grant Edwards in Yacht

We are roughly near the tip of Cape York in Far North Queensland en-route to Horn Island (which is part of the Thursday group of islands) to pick up Mikkel Anthonisen (who is the founder and inspiration behind the Oceans of Hope project). We left Cairns Wednesday morning after we had a couple of days familiarizing ourselves with the boat while we waited for our skipper to arrive back from Denmark.

With a crew of six and two skippers (Son and Father), we have sailed North today with beautiful weather (approx 29 degrees, with clear blue sunny skies). A bit different to the cold snap, I hear you are all experiencing at home.

Life on-board involves two crew and a skipper rotating every three hours round the clock being on watch duty. Duties involve tasks such as sail setting, breakfast/lunch/dinner preparation, steering/navigating the boat and general boat housekeeping duties.

We are currently sailing through the night to our intended destination of Horn Island. From here it is onto Darwin after sailing across the Gulf of Carpenteria where we are scheduled to arrive by Sunday this week.

We are cruising at between 6 – 10 knots which is roughly 10 – 17km/hour. The group currently on board includes three Australians, three Danes, one Belgian, and one American.

A special greeting to my daughter Maddie, Year 2/3 Classmates & Mrs Dignam from Clifton Park Primary School – I hope all is well. Listen to your teacher, parents, and grandparents and I will see you at school in a few weeks.

Report from Skipper Kristian:
Goodbye to Cairns and welcome to a new crew and another leg of our voyage! We arrived at Thursday Island, Queensland yesterday to pick up Mikkel and are now on our way to Darwin.
The weather has been light out of the southeast, giving us calm conditions to start off the leg with our brand new crew.

Local time onboard is 02:00 and current position -20.7972, 144.4043.
